UUSC is excited to announce two opportunities for experiential learning this summer: Please join us! You can put on your tool belt and help renovate a home for a family in Minneapolis or you can walk in the footsteps of civil-rights leaders on a journey through Alabama and Georgia.
* Building Justice: A UUSC JustWorks Camp Minneapolis, Minn., June 12–19. Housing is a fundamental human right. Pick up a hammer and help renovate a home for one family while learning and reflecting about the causes of poverty and homelessness. Participants will engage in light construction work each day as part of a Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity project. We’ll spend our evenings meeting local Unitarian Universalists and others who are organizing to address homelessness and other economic-justice issues. Volunteers of all skill levels may participate, although knowledge of construction is very helpful. A few nonconstruction volunteer slots are available. Go to http://www.uusc.org/content/building_justice_2010.
*Freedom Summer a Civil Rights Journey* Georgia and Alabama, July 10–17. Participants will travel by bus from Atlanta, Ga., to the historic cities of Birmingham, Montgomery, and Selma, Ala. There, you will meet and hear directly from some of the courageous people who worked to desegregate schools, register new voters, and bring an end to racial discrimination in the United States. Freedom Summer will bring together youth and adults from all over the country. Come see where history was made, hear the stories of those who were there to witness it, and learn about the progressive, nonviolent organizing techniques used by civil-rights activists and how they are still being used today. Go to www.uusc.org/content/freedom_summer_civil_rights_journey_2010.

Many thanks to the people who bought, baked and served at the Senior Youth bake sales held on two recent Sundays. They made $350! The money will be used to purchase supplies for the Midnight Run. The Midnight Run, is a volunteer organization dedicated to finding common ground between the housed and the homeless, www.midnightrun.org. Volunteers distribute food, clothing, blankets and personal care items to the homeless poor on the streets of New York City. The late-night relief efforts create a forum for trust, sharing, understanding and affection. That human exchange, rather than the exchange of goods, is the essence of the Midnight Run mission. The Youth will bring personal care items and prepare 100 meals to take on the Midnight Run and are requesting your support in donations of items and cash. See any Senior Youth or Ilene Corina for a list of what they need. Any money they collect will go towards purchasing deli meat, eggs, chili and fresh fruit. Thank you!

Thank you!

On Sunday February 28 and through the month of March, we all will focus on the important activity of “beginning again”. This is the time each year when we consider afresh what SNUUC means to each of us. And then, we decide how much of our personal financial resources we will commit to SNUUC in the coming fiscal year. This annual “beginning” generates the life’s blood of our spiritual home. Last year we tried a new format that worked very well. We got together at meals and talked “commitment” -- sharing our stories of what SNUUC means to us and why we continue making and keeping our pledges. These Commitment Events proved convivial, efficient and productive and were very warmly embraced by the congregation. During the month of March, the Stewardship Committee will facilitate a series of events. Sign up for the date and time that best suits. If are unable to attend an event, Stewardship will be glad to “canvass” you the old fashioned way – by appointment. 2010–11 Commitment Events at SNUUC: ● Sunday March 7: Supper at 6:00 ● Sunday March 14: Lunch at 12:15 ● Sunday March 21: Lunch at 12:15 or Supper at 6:00 ● Sunday March 28: Lunch at 12:15 Stewardship Committee: Ellen Zaehringer-Gach, Barbara Singer, Arlene Brown, Carl Spatt

Everyone knows that coffee hour is an important aspect of our Sunday's together. However, as you can see from the Open Line, very few dates have been filled for this month and beyond. If you enjoy coffee hour, then please volunteer. It does not have to be elaborate. The minimum asked is to bring 1/2 gallon of milk and come at 10:00am and make coffee. Ask a friend or member of a committee you are on to do it with you. Also watch for “pot luck" Sundays where you can bring one thing to share. Choose a date and contact Mary Brower at mlbrowerapr@aol.com or 516-532-2554 to schedule. The sign up sheet is usually on the coffee table.
Security at SNUUC As many of you may have heard, three cars were vandalized during an evening event on January 29 at SNUUC. The car windows were broken and things were stolen. The Buildings and Grounds Committee will be working with the Board of Trustees to address increased exterior lighting, as well as repairing the light outside the sanctuary exit. In addition, the Freeport Police Department was quite responsive to our situation and made a few drives through the property during a recent event. In the meantime, it might help to keep out of sight any valuables you may leave in your vehicle parked on the property.
The Long Island Council of Churches’ Emergency Food Pantries in Freeport (450 N. Main Street, 516-868-4989) and Riverhead (407 Osborne Avenue at Lincoln, 631-727-2210) are feeding many more people than last year—which was itself a record year. They particularly need donations of fresh produce, low-sodium food, low-fat food, low-sugar food, Ensure (and similar supplements), infant formula (especially those with iron, such as Enfamil with LIPIL). Non-perishables of all sorts can be donated—even fruitcake. Donations of toiletries and personal care items also are welcome. Please call before bringing clothes—we already have lots to give away.
The Freeport pantry needs a copier, vacuum cleaner, and small shopping carts.
The Riverhead pantry needs some comfortable chairs or a small couch.
They also need drivers who can pick up food donations occasionally and deliver them to Freeport, Hempstead, or Riverhead, as you are needed and as you happen to be available—with no guilt when you aren’t.

Many thanks go to all who contributed to our special collection to benefit relief programs in Haiti. We collected $1,781! THE UUA UUSC Haiti Relief Fund also thanks you for your generous support! Click here for more information about the UUA/UUSC Haiti Relief Fund.

This year’s Roe anniversary will be an opportunity to learn more about how we, as a movement, can put women’s life experiences and needs front and center in our advocacy work.” The event starts with a wine and cheese reception at 6:30pm, followed by conversation with Ms. Baker at 7pm. Rather than charging for tickets this year, they ask for a suggested donation of $10 per person ($5 for students). LIAC UU Connect is a sponsor of this event. Senior youth may be dropped off at 6:30pm and picked up by 8:30. All others must be accompanied by a responsible adult. RSVP required by Tuesday January 20. Carpooling is encouraged. For more information contact Ilene Corina. All Youth and families are encouraged to attend.

We also need drivers who can pick up food donations occasionally and deliver them to Freeport, Hempstead, or Riverhead, as you are needed and as you happen to be available—with no guilt when you aren’t.
